Japan, Qatar Strike Landmark 27-Year LNG Agreement
Major Japanese energy firm Jera Co. and Qatar's state-owned QatarEnergy executed the long-term pact.
"Jera remains committed to building a resilient, well-balanced LNG procurement portfolio by sourcing from the Middle East, Asia-Pacific, the United States, and other regions," said the company.
Jera ranks among the globe's largest LNG purchasers.
LNG-powered thermal generation continues anchoring Japan's energy infrastructure despite Tokyo's push toward nuclear and renewable expansion.
Under the latest energy roadmap, thermal power's contribution will shrink to 30%-40% by fiscal 2040—a dramatic drop from the 68.6% recorded in fiscal 2023.
Japan brought in 66.15 million tons of LNG during 2023, with Qatar supplying 4.4% of total imports. Australia dominated shipments at 41.6%, while Malaysia provided 15.6%.
In a parallel development, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry formalized a memorandum of understanding with JERA and QatarEnergy, establishing a framework enabling Tokyo to secure emergency LNG deliveries during natural disasters or critical energy shortages.
