Japan Calls for Diplomacy After Trump Issues New Threat to Iran
Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara, speaking at a government news conference, signaled that Tokyo would not retreat from its mediating posture, vowing that Japan will "persist with diplomatic efforts with the international community to de-escalate the situation quickly."
The top government spokesman expressed cautious optimism that ongoing negotiations between Washington and Tehran would "move in a positive direction," according to Tokyo-based media.
Kihara's remarks came in direct response to Trump's latest escalatory rhetoric. Speaking Wednesday, the US president declared that Washington is "nearing completion" of its military objectives in Iran, but paired that assessment with a menacing warning: "We're going to hit them extremely hard over the next two to three weeks. We're going to bring them back to the Stone Ages, where they belong."
The conflict has its roots in a joint US-Israeli offensive launched on February 28, which has since claimed the lives of more than 1,340 people — among them then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran has responded with sustained waves of drone and missile strikes directed at Israel and Gulf states hosting American military installations.
The human cost for US forces has been significant: 13 service members have been killed and approximately 303 others wounded since the outbreak of hostilities — casualties that have intensified domestic and international pressure on Washington to define its endgame.
